A massive cloudburst in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand has unleashed devastating flash floods, with dozens feared trapped under debris in the worst-hit area of Dharali village, located in Uttarkashi district.
The disaster, which occurred around 1:30 PM IST (08:00 GMT), sent torrents of water and sludge surging through this popular tourist destination, destroying infrastructure and severely impacting the local population.
What Happened?
A cloudburst—an intense and sudden downpour over a small area—swelled the Kheerganga river, sending tonnes of muddy water crashing downhill, tearing through roads, shops, hotels, and residential buildings in Dharali.
Key Details:
Location: Dharali, 2 km from Harsil, Uttarkashi
Time of Incident: ~1:30 PM IST
Cause: Cloudburst over hilly terrain
Result: Flash floods, building collapses, blockage of Bhagirathi river
Dramatic videos captured by residents show a violent wave of water consuming the streets, with villagers shouting “run, run!” as they watched helplessly.
Rescue Operations Underway
Teams from the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have reached the site and are actively involved in rescue and relief operations. However, rescue efforts are hampered by:
Continued heavy rainfall
Blocked roads due to mudslides
Disrupted telecommunication networks
Some of the injured victims have been taken to the army medical camp in Harsil for treatment.
Ancient Temple Damaged, River Blocked
Locals have reported that the ancient Kalpkedar temple is now buried under layers of slush and has suffered visible damage. Additionally, the debris has:
Blocked a portion of the Bhagirathi River
Created an artificial lake, submerging large areas
Engulfed a government helipad
Major Risk:
If this artificial lake is not drained soon, it could flood downstream villages and towns, posing a grave risk to thousands of residents.
🇮🇳 PM Modi Responds
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), offering condolences and support to those affected:
“I pray for the well-being of all the victims... Relief and rescue teams are engaged in every possible effort. No stone is being left unturned in providing assistance.”
